FEW years ago I remember discussions regarding the plan for the new Guildhall Square Cultural Quarter, following the demolition of the Tyrrell & Green building in the city centre.

At that time the ‘vision’ for the area included allowing for good views from the parks across the square to the impressive facade of the Guildhall, and of course the opposite view from the Guildhall to the parks.

I was therefore disappointed on visiting the square recently to discover that the new buildings currently being erected on the site appear to have allowed for only the smallest of gaps between them, thereby potentially restricting this vista to the smallest of glimpses.

If this is going to be their final appearance, what a shame that the opportunity to create a stunning vista in this key area of the city will have been lost.

I took a photograph of what the view might look like, albeit with no buildings at all on the cleared site, from Andrews Park, that appeared in your Caught on Camera feature in February 2011.
