May I respond to the letter from Colin Hingston, when he reported here the numbers, referring to those in prison from EU countries.

I have asked around to find out if he is correct. He must be wrong. The total population of our prisons is approximately 85,000. Thirteen per cent or so are foreign nationals, from 157 different countries.

Of those about 6,000 are from Jamaica, Poland, Irish Republic, Romania, Nigeria, Lithuania, Pakistan, India, Somalia and Vietnam. Out of those the majority are indeed from Jamaica, Poland and Irish Republic.

Here in the UK we do jail far more people than any other EU member country.

Therefore figures may then appear high. Also do remember as an example, Spain extradited 130,000 Brits (2009 to 2014) who have been charged with criminal offences.

As for UKIP’s claims that overseas nationals are here to automatically claim benefits, this is a nonsense. They forget how many Brits live abroad and make claims from those member countries.

In the meantime, I hope readers watched the BBC2 programme about the Ramsgate UKIP local party. It just about sums up the party.

I do not write this letter out of disrespect.

I just wish UKIP members would stop peddling inaccurate information.

Richard Grant, Burley.
