WHILE waiting at the level crossing in Mountpleasant Road, I noticed a police speed check van with its camera pointing at the crossing.

I assume this was more about motorists attempting to cross after the lights start flashing red than it was about speed.

I certainly have no argument with the enforcement of laws relating to dangerous driving, something which, at a level crossing, could cause a horrendous accident.

However, I wonder if the inconsistency in waiting times is something that adds to the impatience of motorists.

I live in adjoining Radcliffe Road, so frequently have to use the crossing, and have noticed (over all the years since the end of the level crossing box), that there seems to be no policy regarding waiting times.

On some occasions I have waited 25 minutes between trains, on other occasions the barriers open for four or five cars, and then shut again. This doesn’t excuse dangerous driving, but I do think it contributes towards the exasperation felt by those waiting.

Is there a policy? I can find nowhere within the fragmented railway system to make this enquiry.
