REFERENCE your report in Friday’s Echo of the road accident involving a cyclist in Bursledon Road.

I do hope that the young lady recovers quickly from her injuries, and the bus driver too, from what must have been a nasty shock to him.

What I would like to comment on, though, is the scene shown in your picture. Why does it take four police vehicles and their crews to attend such a scene?

Why are no fewer than six police officers standing chatting?

Once it was known that they were not required they should have been stood down and returned to other duties.

Why is it necessary to close the road for more than three hours?

Presumably the casualties were away to hospital within a short time; the debris could have been cleared in minutes and the bus moved to clear the road.

We keep being told that the police are ‘stretched’. This picture doesn’t support that argument; they all look pretty relaxed to me.

Time and time again we hear of mammoth delays to traffic following accidents.

It seems to me that after helping the injured, getting the traffic moving again should be a prime objective. This picture doesn’t suggest that it is.
