AS SOME of you know I stood for election against Julian Lewis in the New Forest East Constituency in the recent General Election.

I came second with almost 9,000 votes.

I was disappointed and yet at the same time pleased with the result. I think the sudden emergence of the SNP as a real threat to our system pushed people into safety Conservative mode, and I understand that.

I entered politics about six months ago, so with limited funds and a few dedicated people, I think you will agree we did extremely well.

Before the election I was made redundant from Hampshire County Council and so I now have to find a job.

I know what it’s like to be out of work and struggling to make ends meet.

This why I wanted to represent the people of NFE, because I am an ordinary man – not rich or privileged – but just like the thousands that walk or drive to work each day, struggle with life and try to do the best for their families.

I wanted to thank all those people who had the confidence to trust and vote for me, and to reassure you that I will be challenging Julian again at the next election, if I am fit and healthy enough to do so.

I was surprised at the emotions this election stirred.

Enough to make people commit criminal damage and make false allegations of assault, to ignore help offered and to snub honourable intentions.

I was shocked at the depth to which some people sank to make mischief.

I understand now how nasty politics can be, but despite all that, for me it was simply about trying to do the right thing for the people here in The New Forest, to try to make life a little more tolerable for those who struggle on a day to day basis.

I am happy to endure all that again and continue to do so, because it’s what I believe in.

Thank you once again.
