Why does it seem to be so difficult for a worrying number of Southampton motorists to drive safely?

I see countless people using their phones at the wheel, speeding, parking and even DRIVING on pavements, jumping red lights, parking on cycle paths/lanes, entering bike boxes at junctions while the light is red (which is the same offence as jumping the lights all together), driving with no lights at night, blocking junctions regardless of whether they are box junctions or not, failing to give way when required, not indicating, indicating incorrectly, overtaking where it is unsafe or totally ILLEGAL, such as when there is a double solid line between the lanes or a single solid line on the side nearest to them, making illegal turns or turning from the wrong lane and not giving enough space to vulnerable road users to keep them safe.

Also on that note, to pre-empt the usual comments this would attract, I admit that yes, a similar percentage of cyclists also do many of those things, BUT they’re INCREDIBLY unlikely to kill anybody but themselves in doing so.

Also, it is worryingly LEGAL to use the phone while cycling which is something that I WILL agree, they should change.

Either way, all of us, ESPECIALLY motorists due to the fact that they are statistically the most dangerous road users, should aim to use the roads in a much safer manner.

Yes that includes pedestrians as many will step out into the road or from behind a vehicle without looking.
