RE THE Portswood link, I appeared for the objectors at the public inquiry. The nub of the objection was that the proposed new road would involve the demolition of many houses to take it into the city centre.
Soon after the inquiry ended the then city council (though from 1974 until 1997 the city was a district of the Hampshire County Council) abandoned their proposal.
Later the proposal was resurrected when the late Councillor Norman Best CBE was leader of the city council.
However, the new road, the Thomas Lewis Way, ran alongside the railway line as before but ceased when it reached the junction with Portswood Road, and so involved minimal demolition.
The shortened Thomas Lewis Way has since given general satisfaction so far as I can judge (though some drivers drive along too fast for safety).
