AS A regular visitor to the Southampton waterfront I have recently noticed the demise of the last handful of classic dockside cranes, presumably having finally exhausted their usefulness after many decades.

These cranes once stood in their dozens and formed the backdrop to countless photographs of the famous liners that graced the port, and indeed helped to define Southampton’s very skyline.

As they were such a link to the past I mourn the passing of these iconic and elegant pieces of dock furniture.

Do other readers know more about their history?
