I DO have a great deal of sympathy for the independent councillors on the Isle of Wight who have decided that they have had enough of implementing the Conservative austerity cuts.

It’s fairly rare for politicians to resign for principles.

This week I tried but failed to convince the Conservatives on Hampshire County Council not to increase the cost of meals on wheels.

It means older people will have to find over £200 more a year from their fixed incomes for a vitally important service that not only provides the hot nourishment they need but gives a lot of lonely, isolated and vulnerable people a daily visit. Some of the older people have said they cannot afford the increased cost.

I have pointed out that the cost to the NHS and Social Services is far higher treating malnourished older folk than any savings they hope to make by hiking up the costs way above inflation.

Almost all councillors want to deliver services for people, not to increase costs or withdraw services, especially from the most in need.

With respect to the Conservative politicians at Westminster and Hampshire, they really need to consider where their duty lies.

Is it to the party line, or to the community?

Councillor David Harrison, Hampshire County Council Opposition, Spokesman for Health & Adult Services.
