APART from some commercial and historic family reasons, there is an ever growing craze for sportswomen and so-called “celebrities” to carry their maiden name when getting married and adding the surname of husband/partner etc. to it.
Imagine this: Dee Inney marrying Gordon Bennett and becoming Inney-Bennett.
Their offspring then marrying the issue of Euphrates Delta and Jordan Tay and, continuing the trend, becoming an Inney-Bennett-Delta-Tay. After a few generations of this a child of succession could well have the surname of Inney-Bennett-Jordan-Tay-Inverness-Caledonia- Sutherland-Scott-Vaughan-Williams-Avon-Somerset- Norfolk-Broad-India-Rubber-Treacle-Tart-Yorkshire- Pudding!
Of course this is hypothetical and an extreme example, but the willingness to perpetuate the fad shows just how silly it could become.
Filling out forms will be a nightmare and the passport office would implode!
