RALPH Prothero, (letters 15th February) thinks I am wrong to protest against the state visit offered to President Trump only a few days into his term of office.
If he would care to research his facts he would find that the unconstitutional Executive Order signed by Trump goes much further than restrictions ever entertained by former President Obama. Under Trump, the US is detaining people that have already undergone lengthy vetting procedures. Imposing a blanket travel ban against entire nationalities violates commitments the US made under international law.
There are also a good number of other good reasons why Trump isn’t deserving of a state visit, some of which I suspect will unravel as the days and weeks unfold. It was a serious misjudgement on the part of our government, putting the Royal family in an embarrassing position.
I value a special relationship with the USA, but not with with Mr Trump. Besides, with nearly two million people signing a petition against the State Visit, it would seem I am hardly a lone voice.
