I AM pleased to see that Southampton City Council is bringing in alternative fortnightly collection of refuse with one week for recycling material and the next week, the rest. This is long overdue.

The advantages to Southampton residents being fewer refuse lorries on the roads and hence less air pollution and traffic congestion.

Also, it will help people to become more recycling aware.

In the mean-time it appears that the local Tories are tying themselves in knots over this. First, they support their government imposing savage cuts to council grants, to support their failed economic policy.

Let’s face it, if their economic policy was working, they would not need to make savage cuts.

Next they try to persuade the local population that we should keep the weekly collection which is no longer financially viable due to their savage cuts!

I get the impression the Tories want to do nothing about pollution or traffic congestion and are just taking this position to be awkward.
