I WAS amazed to hear that over the last few years, when we have had air tests around the city, that unbelievably we have not had one in the docks where ships are on 24/7 with enormously large diesel engines.

So it would seem our readings from car emissions are wrong, posing the question, is a diesel congestion charge for the city necessary?

The council has just been given £900,000 from central government. They intend to spend £100,000 on driving lessons for council employees and taxi drivers!

Taxis should be told when they renew their cars; it should be with greener models (not diesel).

Council drivers already have trackers fitted to their vehicles which should be modified to assess a driver’s performance, thus making them more efficient.

Millbrook, however, I’m told is as bad as it gets with car pollution. I would suggest this is because the docks back directly on to the area, yet we have no air reading for the docks!

The unions should have insisted on it for health of their members and “our leaders” should have insisted on it for all of our health.

At least when we have all the information we can move on and know exactly where we are. I have just been informed by a Millbrook councillor that the docks produce 40% of the emissions. So we now pay a congestion charge to compensate for the docks.
