A BONUS of being retired means that my wife and I have been able to watch much of the Winter Olympics on TV. Somehow, despite the nne-hour time difference between the UK and Korea, the majority of the coverage has been live.

The BBC comes in for a lot of criticism for the ever decreasing number of major sporting events it can broadcast because of budget limitations and huge salaries paid to male presenters.

However, all of the daily presentations have been superb thanks to Clare Balding’s deep general knowledge of all the sports involved and the selection of experts of the individual events for the studio discussions and inquests.

A further bonus has been local boy Billy Morgan winning a bronze medal in the snow board jumping event. This is sure to receive a lot of well-earned coverage in the Echo, with recognition of the upturned tooth brush surface of the dry slope at Southampton Sports Centre, where Billy has done a lot of his training.

Well done all round.
