HAVING recently returned from another enjoyable visit to Liverpool, a recipient of the title "City of culture" I was somewhat surprised to see Southampton applying for the honour.

What, may I ask, has Southampton got to offer? Unlike Liverpool, which protected its distinguished buildings, Southampton council knocked them down in years gone by.

Liverpool has very much changed, upgraded, and reinvented itself. It has a shopping centre that puts Southampton's to shame and a great indoor market and great indoor shopping malls.

It's a very clean, tidy city with friendly, accommodating people with a sense of humour second to none. There are great street entertainers, which draw large crowds. Even their homeless people are non-confrontational and pleasant.

Liverpool has also has a great influx of student accommodation but in buildings which blend in – like the refurbished Lewis store.

Perhaps Southampton councillors could take a fact finding tour of such a place.
