I NOTE that my local Conservative MP, Dr Julian Lewis, thinks that he and his staff have no need for e-mail, relying on the good old tradition of letter writing (Letters, May 1).

I have been using e-mail for so long that I can hardly imagine life without it. It must be an awful chore, having to record everything on paper, then posting it. Then there is the filing of written correspondence and eventually the shredding (which can't be recycled).

I would not presume to tell Dr Lewis how he should run his office (even if it is at the taxpayers' expense). However, a small investment in the necessary technology and a bit of staff training would enable thousands of his constituents to contact him in a quick, efficient and environmentally friendly manner.

COUNCILLOR DAVID HARRISON, Totton.
