Threatened care home needed investment

10:00am Saturday 13th September 2008

I WAS very upset to read that Jane Brentor, Southampton City Council’s head of health and community care, stated that Whitehaven Lodge is an unpopular elderly residential unit.

Maybe if she listened to what the staff and clients who live and work at Whitehaven Lodge have been asking for, she might have put the much needed money and permanent staff into the home, which has been needed for the last few years, instead of letting it become run down and neglected by social services and Southampton City Council.

Whitehaven staff have even fundraised to buy paint, and our cook did most of the decoration, without any help from social services or the council.

All of Whitehaven’s permanent staff are dedicated and work very hard, and like most families the clients on the whole are happy to live out the rest of their lives there or at the very least to have the choice.

Maybe social services and the council have neglected our home, so they can close it, and then to say we are not a viable unit to run.

We are still receiving phone calls daily from families looking for care for their elderly relatives.
