Chris Bluemel (Letters, April 8) makes a number of mistakes.

The Alternative Vote electoral system is not fairer, because extra voting power is given to those who vote for the candidates who get the least number of votes in the first round.

This is because, in the event of no candidate initially getting 50 per cent of the vote, it is the votes of the one who came last which are initially used again, so the votes for the candidate who initially comes last can then decide who is actually elected.

By no stretch of the imagination can that be called fair.

Secondly, Chris Bluemel refers to “many countries with AV”. But there are only three in the world who do, Fiji, Papua New Guinea and Australia!

Thirdly, it is untrue that the Conservatives use AV internally. You get only one vote in such an election, and if someone has to drop out all voters are then invited to vote again between the remaining candidates. This bears no relationship whatever to the proposed AV system.
