We’ve had no success with police drink-drive alerts

FURTHER to Barry of Bitterne’s letter (“What use text alert?”, Letters, January 16), we also have had trouble with the police’s drink-driving text alert.

We know someone who drinks and drives regularly. We have been to Bitterne Police Station and informed them. They gave us a telephone number to phone when this person was drinkdriving.

We telephoned when we knew this person was drink-driving but by the time we gave all the information this person was home.

When we saw the text alert at Christmas we also tried three times, but this person is still driving.

We know when this person is drink-driving and where but it seems that nothing can be done.

We are trying our best to get them off the road but we don’t know what else to do.

NAME AND ADDRESS SUPPLIED.

Buy an old banger, or maybe you have one already.
Have a gentle bump with the offending drink driver.
Call the police, tell them you have had an accident and you can smell booze on the other driver's breath.
Cops turn up.
Boozer gets arrested.
You get absolved of any blame as the other party was intoxicated.
Why not claim for whiplash whilst you're at it, everyone else does.

What more can we do? We do our part and are let down for doing so! If these text alerts are used then we should get a reply as to whether the driver has been stopped. After all, we pay for the text service and just get a reply 'Message delivered'. What's the point of that? We want concrete proof that our texts are making a difference. Surely we are entitled to that at least. ANY POLICE OFFICER WANT TO ADD A COMMENT?
