Hospital food’s not what doctor ordered

ONCE again the issue of hospital meals is on the menu.

On Sunday, January 15, at lunchtime at Southampton General Hospital, I went to see my wife and help her to eat.

Her lunch arrived (fish, chip and peas) of which only the fish was edible (almost). The chips did not look like they were made from real potatoes and the peas were a dried-up slush.

I know she could have had a choice – roast, say – but she says the meat is tough and never varies.

In the five weeks she has been in Southampton General Hospital I have been there at every meal time and the meals are identical in form, as though they are clones. Today an 84-year-old lady in the next bed said: “I’m eating it whatever it is!”

No further comment.

There are always going to be difficulties in mass food provision such as in a hospital setting, barracks, school, etc. In the case of hospitals it is undoubtedly compounded by the fact that food must be taken to its recipients rather than vice versa.

How fortunate this lady is, in having a husband who will visit for every meal and presumably bring her an alternative.

It's a hospital - not a hotel.

A hospital not a hotel! are you kidding me!
18% of people come OUT of hospital in a worse condition than the went in due to malnourishment.
18%!!
Ive seen it with my own eyes, and while I accept that the nurses can be very busy, there is a huge percentage who are lazy swine.
Ive seen in with my own eyes while with my mother in law for 7 weeks!
One breakfast time, she recieved 1 dried out sausage!
Other old people were given sandwiches which they couldnt reach or open, drinks on trolleys out of reach, left on pottys until they flowed over onto the floors (1 hour 45 minutes!)
A lady who was very distressed during the night walked off with a catheta bag attached. The nurses eventually went looking for her and found her locked in the toilet where they left her for 2 hours before she returned. She was calling for help for hours on end before they put her in a private room.
The nurses said she passed away peacefully, liars!

I'm afraid i have to add my 2 cents worth on this issue of Southampton Hospital. First let me say that the medical staff do a fantastic job of bringing dead and dying patients back to life and giving those that choose to take that second chance. A chap i know has enforseema as well as COPD. Smoke around 2.5 ounces of tobacco a week. When a doctor was called to his home they put him in hospital by ambulance. He walked into the ambulance they said with pneumonia. By 6:30 am he was in a coma, on life support expected to die that day. Needless to say The doctors brought him back for a second chance. He still lives almost two weeks later. As an ex hospital diet cook myself, it is hard to make sure the meals get to where they should in the shortest possible time without someone to take them. Staff have been cut to the bone. Catering has been sublet to whoever for the cheapest version. Cleaning is none existent and then we wonder why health in hospitals creates more sick than healing.
