Track down the Twitter cowards

I WOULD like to add my condemnation of any so called Saints fans who responded to David Nugent’s ‘twitter’ with vile, and uncalled for, hate ‘twitterings’ of their own.

To suggest that someone should take their own life or wishing that his family would ‘die of AIDS’ and other sick comments in anonymous ‘twittering’ is cowardly in the extreme and brings shame on thousands of decent Saints fans.

David Nugent was ill-advised to make public comments about Saints fans being ‘Scummers’ before the game, but he at least put his name to his comments unlike those cowards who responded in such a pathetic way.

I hope they are tracked down and punished, they make me ashamed to be a Saints fan.

It is a good job I know these morons are in a minority.

I spend a lot my time in retirement showing people around our wonderful stadium at St Mary’s and encouraging youngsters in particular, to become long term Saints fans.

I point out that we are a ‘family club’ and I hope I express my passion for Saints in a constructive way.

I saw my first game at The Dell in 1940 as a ten-year-old, and now at the age of 81 my love for the club is as strong and passionate as ever.

But passion for Saints does not mean I hate any other team, its players, or supporters.

I just hope this senseless abuse of an ex-Portsmouth player is not a prelude to a hatefuelled campaign leading up to our game against our neighbours in April.

I am proud to be a Saints supporter, I don’t hate Pompey or any of their players or ex players, and am happy as long we are above them in the league and beat them whenever we play them!

I must say I enjoy winning against Pompey more that any other team.

Yes, David Nugent was stupid to make the comments he made, and his antics right in front of Saints fans after scoring on Tuesday were wrong and went on too long.

The referee was also at fault for allowing his celebrations to continue for so long so close to the home fans.

But why all the blind hatred?

Football is a game, isn’t it?

To those slating Nugent, I say ‘get over it and get back to supporting your team.’

Well said Herbie, these people are the "scum" as accused. They are an absolute embarrasment to the true fans of our great club. I have always thought that Saints fans have more class than certain other clubs, and believe the outside world has seen us like that as well.As you say,a great family based club and atmosphere,a reputation to be proud of.
Weed out these idiots and make an example of them, ban them for life. Having said that, they probably have never been to a match, surely they can't be true supporters.

Well said Herbie.

Like you, I remember the days when some people would watch Saints one week and Portsmouth the next, and it caused no raised eyebrows or reason for a fight or abuse.

What caused this problem? I would suggest that it was an over-reaction by FA who, instead of cracking down on a couple of clubs where there had been trouble, they decided that crowd segregation was the answer. The result is that now it is easy to identify the 'enemy.' Instead of sitting or standing alongside you, where you can chat with each other, they are grouped together - each one egging the other on to see who can give the most abuse.

After the match, the away support leave together, and as we have seen, they are easy targets for the home club's hooligan element.

I am not a person who keeps harking on about 'The Good Old Days,' but I do miss those days when it was not considered a sin to speak and have a pint with opposing fans.
