Workers’ demo plan is a churlish reaction

WHILE I understand the feelings of the council workers and their concern for their employment and conditions I think that to disrupt the opening of the commemorative attraction of the SeaCity Museum is purely a churlish reaction.

As a member of the British archaeological community I am all too aware of the current systematic closure of museums and heritage sites, by councils across the nation.

The people of Southampton should be grateful that their heritage is being kept alive while other communities are losing theirs. When the economy of the country improves and people have money to spend more freely than now, places like Southampton will benefit from their established heritage sites to attract visitors while those councils will regret their short-sightedness.

There has to be light at the end of the tunnel; let not this city extinguish it before we get there!

Let’s not cut off our nose to spite our face!

JOHN WOOD, Southampton.

When workers see their colleagues being made redundant and those that are left are not only having to cover for those losses, but also have a wage freeze, I can quite understand their action.

On one hand the City Council is saying that it has to make these cuts on the grounds of economy, and on the other hand they are able to find the funds to build this monstrous white elephant.

Of course, for you, a member of the British archaeological community, this may appear to be money well spent, and a facility that you would visit on a fairly regular basis.

For those who have either lost their jobs, or are in danger of losing them because of financial cut-backs, the money spent on this project has cost them their jobs and has had a detrimental effect on their families.

The museum will, in my opinion, be a 'five minute wonder' that will attract the 'great and good' for the opening ceremony, interested visitors for a couple of months, and then rely on school visits to boost numbers justifying the expense.

The demo is proof is any more is needed that it's all 'me, me , me, gimme more' while not taking any pride in the city that has provided them with a living for many years.

So you would put the City's need for a museum before the needs of your family?

The City has not been 'Lady Bountiful', handing out cash for nothing to these people, they have had to work for their money, it was not charity.

It's possible to do both at the same time - shocking revelation I know.

Explain.

How can you put your family's need before the City's need when you are putting the City's need before that of your family?

I don't think that even Paul Daniel could perform that magic trick.

I dunno - he managed to marry Debbie McGee, he can do anything. I'd like to walk up to her & snap my fingers just to make sure she hasn't been hypnotised all these years.

BTW, he managed to cut cut off his left index finger and the tip of his ring finger while using a circular saw while practising for an act on New Years Day.

Bet I could do that.

Yeah - but every time I have used the workers from the council I have come to the conclusion THAT THEY DON'T WORK VERY HARD !!!!! They have had it easy for way too long and now that has to change coz we don't have an endless supply of cash to pay for 3 people to do what I would do on my own !!!!

Interesting to read in The Echo that, while adding many council staff the the unemployment register as a cost-cutting measure, the City Council can find £230,000 in consultant's fees, for them to draw up a city 'Master Plan.'

What's the betting that these consultants are Southampton-based?

What's the betting that, when the plans are drawn up, there will be the investment from private capital to transfer it from the drawing board to actual bricks and mortar?

Answers on a post card to Royston Smith.

Shoong.

I note that you have not explained how you can put your family's needs before those of the council at the same time as you are putting the council's needs before those of your family.

Are you still thinking about it?

Does it really matter where they are based? It's about future development and generating things for the future for Southampton!! There comes a point when everything that everyone wants cannot be paid for and decisions have to be made where the money goes!! You obviously know nothing about business/commerce etc. Or shall we just carry on as we are and don't rock the boat - because we might upset a few lazy council workers who have had it too good for too long !!

"There comes a point when everything that everyone wants cannot be paid for and decisions have to be made where the money goes."

That's true, but what exactly do you think that the City will get for their £230,000 consultants' fees?

They will get plans for a 'super area' of the city to be developed. Nice artists' impressions of what the tree-lined streets they propose will look like.

Check Portsmouth's 'Northern Quarter.'

Portsmouth City Council also paid through the nose for Consultants to come up with a blue-print for the area that once included the Tricorn. Those plans have now run out and would need to be submitted.
Why?
There were not the developers prepared to make the investment.

Making plans is the easy, but also a very costly bit and does not mean that it will take place.

The bigger the plan, the bigger the consultants' fees and the more money it costs to get the first brick laid.

The first brick on the Northern Quarter has yet to be laid a decade since the plans were agreed.

Would you be prepared to bet a sizeable sum that the Southampton project would ever come to fruition in this financial climate?

Check out how many shops are closing or have closed already.

Check out how many more charity shops there are.

Check out how many vacant offices there are for rent.

When you have done so, you will understand why I am less than optimistic, and think that these consultants' fees are just another case of money spent on 'pie in the sky' dreams instead of on realities.
