WHILE I understand the feelings of the council workers and their concern for their employment and conditions I think that to disrupt the opening of the commemorative attraction of the SeaCity Museum is purely a churlish reaction.
As a member of the British archaeological community I am all too aware of the current systematic closure of museums and heritage sites, by councils across the nation.
The people of Southampton should be grateful that their heritage is being kept alive while other communities are losing theirs. When the economy of the country improves and people have money to spend more freely than now, places like Southampton will benefit from their established heritage sites to attract visitors while those councils will regret their short-sightedness.
There has to be light at the end of the tunnel; let not this city extinguish it before we get there!
Let’s not cut off our nose to spite our face!
JOHN WOOD, Southampton.

The demo is proof is any more is needed that it's all 'me, me , me, gimme more' while not taking any pride in the city that has provided them with a living for many years.

The City has not been 'Lady Bountiful', handing out cash for nothing to these people, they have had to work for their money, it was not charity.

There comes a point when everything that everyone wants cannot be paid for and decisions have to be made where the money goes!! You obviously know nothing about business/commerce etc. Or shall we just carry on as we are and don't rock the boat - because we might upset a few lazy council workers who have had it too good for too long !!

What's the betting that these consultants are Southampton-based?
What's the betting that, when the plans are drawn up, there will be the investment from private capital to transfer it from the drawing board to actual bricks and mortar?

On one hand the City Council is saying that it has to make these cuts on the grounds of economy, and on the other hand they are able to find the funds to build this monstrous white elephant.
Of course, for you, a member of the British archaeological community, this may appear to be money well spent, and a facility that you would visit on a fairly regular basis.
For those who have either lost their jobs, or are in danger of losing them because of financial cut-backs, the money spent on this project has cost them their jobs and has had a detrimental effect on their families.
The museum will, in my opinion, be a 'five minute wonder' that will attract the 'great and good' for the opening ceremony, interested visitors for a couple of months, and then rely on school visits to boost numbers justifying the expense.
