Poll gains a knee-jerk reaction

I AM surprised at the Labour gains in the recent local elections.

I remember the Labour Chancellor handing over the keys of the Treasury and saying: “Im sorry. there is no money.”

This election is a knee-jerk reaction to the medicine we are all about to get.

After many years in office the Labour government let in, without any check, millions of immigrants, flooding the job market.

We have lost our national identity and become citizens of an unwanted state.

But you don’t want to know the truth – its boring. To get the necessary votes I am assured John Prescott went around kicking butts. Even Tony Blair might return – that’s a terrible thought.

I notice the local manifesto recommends taking on the pensioners. There’s a thought. The next general election will sort out the men from the boys so watch with interest.

ALAN BLANDFORD, Southampton.

No they were bullied by the Unions or didn't you read the letter from a disgruntled employee?
The one who was told by the union to vote Labour?
Just one of the few told what to vote is that a free election?
Overseas they have people making sure who votes & that they're fair?
Where were they here? could the elections be deemed null & void? due to the Union actions?
We now have the council the unions wanted but for how long? will the unions get all they want or will the strikes return?

What a load of garbage you spout.

Have you never heard of the term, 'Secret Ballot'?

When you go to vote, where you put your cross is your decision alone, based on your beliefs and experience.

Only an introverted Tory would put all the blame for their party's defeat on a Union telling a member to vote Labour.

The local electorate consisted of far more people than there are local members of the Union, and that electorate decided that they wanted nothing more to do with Royston Smith's dictatorship.

Bullied?

Exercising their democratic right.

You are nothing but a waste of my time. You ought to go around with a sign saying Labour are Gods you total idiot.
How many Union men or people who are lifetime members ( OAP's) received letters telling/asking them to vote Labour?
No one is suppose to put pressure on you to vote for a party the Unions did this so did they break the law?
Some people you can correspond with & some of their points of view ring true & they are open minded enough to see what your saying rings true & you both can see the other side of the story but not you your a joke & I have given up trying to debate with you so please go back to your mates & leave true debaters alone

"No one is supposed to put pressure on you to vote for a party the Unions did this so did they break the law?"

For a start. How the hell can anyone put pressure on anyone else to force them to vote for a certain person?

Nobody repeat NOBODY is permitted to go into the voting booth with you to help you vote. That is why it is called A SECRET VOTE!

If you consider that receiving a letter that seeks your vote at an election is putting pressure on you, then the three main political parties are all as guilty as hell, and their political leaders are as well because they make electioneering broadcasts on both radio and TV.

If you are so weak-willed that you feel under pressure by receiving a letter, then perhaps you should apply for a postal vote, so that you do not have to run the gauntlet of all those nasty people wearing various coloured rosettes.

And you have the temerity to say that I am a joke!

Loosehead speaks more sense on these comment boards than many others. I don't always agree with him, but he has more common sense than most.

In reply to the letter, you are correct, it was a Knee Jerk reaction.

Many people are concerned about the Economy Worldwide and have overlooked all the work that has been done locally.

No matter what I say, we will have to watch what happens to our City in the next few years.

I, hand on heart, would love to say, I have every confidence our City is in great hands. But I feel it's in someone elses hands, ask Unison/Unite. BUT, time will tell....

I am glad that you recognise that the Economic problems are Worldwide and have not blamed all the world's financial ills on Gordon Brown.

In response to the original letter, if the outgoing Labour chancellor did say, "I'm sorry, there is no money" then the reason for that is patently obvious.

Because of an International Banking Crisis, that had its beginnings in the USA, Gordon Brown bailed out British banks and building societies so that people did not lose their savings or their morgages called in, meaning that they lost their homes.

The opposition, led by David Cameron offered no alternative solution at the time, and since then has never said that he would have acted differently.

If that were not enough, Gordon Brown (the Labour Government) had to bail out a number of councils who had invested all their money in Icelandic Banks. This was done so that essential services provided by those councils could be maintained and their work-force be paid.

ALL OF THE ABOVE HAD TO BE PAID FOR.

Despite Cameron's claim that there was no money left in the kitty, he somehow found enough to help bail out the Irish Republic and also make a very large contribution to the IMF.

Not bad for a government that had no money.

So, what have we been faced with?

Cameron's government said that Councils must not raise Council Tax. If they do, the government grant would be reduced accordingly. That is the reason why the council tax has not risen, not because of some magical financial wizardry by Royston Smith. In fact, my guess is that he had to dig deeply into reserves to dig his council out of the mess he got it in.

Will the Labour council transform Southampton into Utopia? Of course not. They are also going to have to take unpopular decisions. However, I hope that these decisions will be taken After Consultation, not by acting as dictators.

Many more people have not overlooked all the work THAT HAS BEEN LOST LOCALLY, thanks to Royston Smith.
