Unbelievable salaries
10:50am Wednesday 23rd May 2012 in Readers' Letters
Southampton City Council loves to justify high salaries by making some sort of comparison with the private sector. That works both ways.
Currently, outside the council bubble economy, the private sector is feeling the full force of the harsh winds of austerity. Pay is being frozen, jobs are being lost and cutbacks are being made.
It is hard to believe that in the current climate a six-figure sum is necessary to attract somebody motivated to work as a simple council clerk.
It would be illuminating to see how the salaries are arrived at, apart from it being some sort of going rate agreed between council employees themselves.

Tracey I thin you've missed the point somewhere. The last Tory council cut the pay of council staff with the highest earners taking the biggest cut.
the public disagreed with their policy and voted in a labour administration committed to restoring pay cuts
do you honestly believe that was the reason the Tories lost?
In Southampton the Tories received a higher share of the vote than any where in the country so if what your saying is true how did that happen?
the tories lost due to it being mid term no other reason!
Labour the Unions all went out of their way to oust the council but it didn't work or why else did areas return Tories?
