MANY Bursledon residents will miss the Crows Nest, a local landmark in the village (“New homes to replace derelict old pub”, Daily Echo, May 26).
The parish council objected to the planning applications for development of the site. Neighbours also objected. The Parish Plan had identified local need for accommodation for older people. Yet the borough council permitted the demolition and development of seven undistinguished family homes.
Older people, many of whom are owner-occupiers, want to remain in familiar communities when they retire and downsize to housing that suits their needs in later life. Opportunities to provide it on sites such as the Crows Nest, must be seized in order to release existing homes to younger families.
