Loser for tourism
4:59pm Friday 1st June 2012 in Readers' Letters
THERE are not many non-chain restaurants in Southampton. One of these is the popular Buttery in Pound Tree Road.
I was surprised to see it is closing soon and to be replaced by Paddy Power bookies. Just what we need – this will be the eighth bookie in central Southampton, the third in Pound Tree Road.
Tourists come to eat non-chain food in Britain, not burgers, pizzas, etc.
NAME AND ADDRESS SUPPLIED.

Surely if enough people had felt this way & used it the shop would still be there?
The biggest thing people can do is if you eat at these cafes and co then tell others. Good service and good food deserves recognition and reward and its a sad fact of life the number of fast food joints we have in Southampton and the surrounding areas.
Theres a couple of good little restaurants at the bottom of east street, too. And a couple of nice cafes on Westend Rd in Bitterne too.

I know Jeremy Moulton was trying to get this sort of thing & get the cruise companies tom put it on their ships for the passengers.
Maybe if all these places could get together & produce a Glossy Magazine for the cruise industry or the cruise ships run TV programs showing what Southampton & this area has to offer as I've seen this done on planes
