THE past week has seen reports about the political parties starting to pick their candidates for election to the role of Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) for Hampshire and the Isle of Wight.
The problem is nobody has asked the public whether we want to replace the current police authority made up of members from around the county with a single person on an £80,000 per year salary.
Can one person represent the views of the population of Hampshire and the Isle of Wight better than the 17 members of the police authority? I don’t think so.
I suggest that when we have the election on November 15, an extra box is added to the form to enable the public to reject the position of PCC.
If more than 50 per cent of the total votes cast are for rejection then we should keep the existing police authority.
DAVID SHERWOOD, Chandler’s Ford.
