Oxford Street changes
9:37am Tuesday 10th July 2012 in Readers' Letters
ALAN Richards (Letters, June 28) expresses concerns about road safety in Oxford Street, Southampton.
This is a shared space scheme, where vehicular access is permitted, but the street is designed with less formal demarcation between vehicle and pedestrian areas. While such designs lead to more interaction between pedestrians and vehicles, there is no evidence that this is detrimental to road safety.
The improvements to Oxford Street aim to create a more vibrant environment, which will increase the number of visitors to the street and the design has expanded the areas for people to eat and drink outside in a continental café style.
There will inevitably be a period of adjustment and we will continue to monitor this. However, I’m confident the changes to Oxford Street will contribute to making Southampton city centre a more attractive and welcoming place.
