DANNY Boyle’s Olympic opening ceremony, though absolutely a brilliant spectacle, was too favourable to right wing politics .
The farming and portrayal of the industrial revolution showed the magnificent efforts of the workers, despite the poverty they endured.
There should have been a cameo of the mill master sitting in his lush mansion, cigar and brandy glass in hand, while the skivvies and butlers curtsied and bowed and scraped around him.
The more modern depiction of Britain showed the NHS and other aspects of present day life, but omitted to show doctors, nurses, police and young people joining dole queues. There could have been a replica palm treed beach, under the trees a bank, bearing the logo “Offshore Tax Free Investment Bank”, whilst ‘beautiful people’ squirt £200 bottles of Bolly over each other.
A high street bank should have been shown, with business -suited bankers stashing sack loads of bonus money into the backs of their luxury Rollers and other flash cars.
The omitting of these aspects of history and current everyday practices by the ‘upper’ echelons of society distorts truth. But, as before stated, a brilliant show.
