A Hampshire man has said it felt like a dream to abseil down the Empire State Building, after being cheered on by a member of the royal family.

Adam Gosling, from Lymington, along with twenty brave Outward Bound supporters, made history by abseiling down the 380-metre tall building in New York City on Monday, helping to raise over £2.4m for The Outward Bound Trust.

The event was the first of its kind – raising funds for the educational charity in the UK and across the globe – with Adam being joined in the abseil by Hollywood actor Jared Leto, as Outward Bound Trustee, Princess Beatrice, cheered on the group.

“Nothing ventured, nothing gained,” said Adam.

“That was my mantra on the terrifying lift journey beyond the viewing platform, it was so worth it!

“The excitement, the view, the support team’s enthusiasm was infectious yet reassuring, the nerves, the adrenalin rush, and of course the abseil.

“The sense of triumph at the bottom and the feeling that we were all in it together with the other abseilers was incredible.”

Adam went on to say: “It still feels a bit like a dream, but I am so proud that I have done it and for such a great charity as well.

“Outward Bound is all about discovering what you're capable of and pushing beyond what you think you can achieve, what better way to do it than this?”

Princess Beatrice, who was present during the rappel to support the charity and its fundraisers, added: “Bringing young people out of their comfort zones and supporting them to achieve something they never thought possible is what Outward Bound is all about.

“I am so happy to offer my support as a Trustee and I am a great admirer of Outward Bound and all they stand for - these participants really are an inspiration.”

The Outward Bound Trust partners with schools, colleges, and employers across the country to encourage young people completing outdoor activities and believe in themselves.

Martin Davidson, Outward Bound CEO, said: “In the UK, Outward Bound inspires thousands of young people every year to achieve something they never thought possible by taking them from inner-city environments into our national parks where they experience the extraordinary and learn what they are truly capable of.”
