NEVER in my life did I think I would hold a leash with an alpaca on the other end.

But that is exactly what happened when I visited Hensting Alpacas in Otterbourne – and it was a crazy, cute, and cracking day out.

We arrived at 10am and were herded into a group with around 30 others. Some were with their young families, others with their partners.

Then, after a short wait, our guide arrived. She was full of energy, and even fuller with knowledge about the animals.

Following a speedy briefing filled with quick-fire facts (and advice on how to avoid being kicked and spat at), the group was ushered up to the pens, where the alpacas were waiting for their designated human.

My girlfriend and I were partnered with this little man, Rowan. Yes, we do share the same haircut - perhaps it was meant to be?

With our fluffy friend in hand, we proceeded to walk around the field with the group.

He was quite skittish at first, but after a couple minutes warmed to us, and eventually let us stroke his neck. Thankfully, alpaca fleece is hypo-allergenic, so I could do this without consequence!

We then got the chance to feed Rowan, meaning he became even more comfortable – although he didn't quite understand that we had to STOP feeding him at some point.

Following the River Itchen, we came across a group of dog walkers. They did a double take, which isn't a surprise; how often do you see an alpaca on a leash, let alone a dozen of them?

Just over an hour passed and we had to hand Rowan back, as tempting as it was to take him home on the back seat of the car.

We were then allowed time with the female alpacas in the fenced area of the field. Armed with a handful of food each, we made our way in and became surrounded by them.

It was quite surreal but a great laugh, and the baby alpacas were adorable.

If you're looking for something out of the ordinary, I'd absolutely recommend Hensting Alpacas.

After all, how many people can say they've walked a South American mammal on a leash?
