A Southampton-based care home is hosting a Dementia Awareness Day on May 17th, equipped with a series of enlightening activities and discussions.

Abbeyfield, the managing body of Speedwell Court in Southampton, has organized this occasion to offer a profound understanding of dementia to those engaged with caring for individuals living with the condition.

This day-long event, scheduled from 10am to 4pm, is free of charge. It provides attendees, notably carers, and family members, with invaluable tips and insights to positively support people with dementia, ensuring they continue to lead a fulfilling life despite their condition.

Moreover, this gathering aims to enhance the capabilities of professionals involved with dementia patients, paving the way for improved service provision.

The Dementia Awareness Day is observed within the Dementia Action Week, a national campaign of the Alzheimer’s Society aiming to consolidate people’s efforts to tackle dementia. The day will encompass various discussions addressing multiple aspects of dementia, with a particular focus on maintaining connections with affected individuals.

Guest speakers for the day, Dr Kellyn Lee and Dr Katie Hough, both Research Fellows at the University of Southampton, will conduct workshops concerning community-based dementia assistance and the association between dementia and hearing loss. Participants can anticipate refreshments upon arrival, followed by lunch.

In addition to Dementia Awareness Day, Speedwell Court has also launched a successful community lunch club in September 2023. This monthly event hosts individuals with dementia and their carers, providing them a complimentary three-course meal, a shared experience with people in similar situations, and an afternoon singing activity featuring popular songs from their youth.

Recommended by Andover Mind, a local dementia support charity, Carolyn and her husband Ian were among the attendees of the lunch club.

Carolyn said: "It allows us the opportunity to relax. Both Ian and I have made some new friends and it is good to know that everyone here, visitors and staff, know what we are going through and are willing to listen and offer support if they can.

"It has quickly become a must-attend event for both of us."

As evident from its progressive measures like the Dementia Awareness Day and community lunch club, Speedwell Court stands as a pioneer in dementia care and support in Hampshire.
