ENTRIES are now open for the 2008 Hampshire Business Awards.

In the second of a series of profiles of the 2008 awards, Phil Cotton of accountants KPMG explains the qualities which he and his judging panel will be looking for in this year's KPMG Company of the Year category.

Now in its 18th year, the KPMG Company of the Year is once again seeking a very special company to take the title in 2008.

"With this year being a special birthday for the award, we are hoping to hear from as many of the county's inspirational businesses as possible which demonstrate all-round business excellence," said Phil, senior partner at KPMG's south coast office.

"Strong financial performance is obviously crucial but it is only part of the winning formula. A business might have a great idea for a product or service but it also needs the right people with skills and motivation to turn it into reality and make it a commercial success.

"Strong leadership is also important, which is crucial for planning for the future, keeping ahead of the market and encouraging innovation. And while the green agenda has become a hot business issue lately, a commitment to protecting and enhancing Hampshire's environment and reputation has always been a high priority."

Last year's winner was VT Group Plc, which demonstrated business excellence during huge change to become the company it is today. Commenting on winning the 2007 KPMG Company of the Year, Paul Lester, CEO of VT Group Plc, said: "Although VT Group has locations around the world, we remain Hampshire-based and it was particularly satisfying for our success to be recognised by our local business colleagues."
