HAMPSHIRE engineers have begun putting together detailed design work for a landmark new bridge across Poole Harbour.
A design for a twin sail' bridge by Netley Marsh based engineers Gifford got the green light from the government after a public inquiry.
The structure will feature a rectangular deck split into triangular halves which will raise regularly to allow ships to pass through. Each half will be raised hydraulically from opposite sides of the 19m span to create the illusion of two rising sails. The project sees Gifford, which employs more than 500 people, return to its successful partnership with architects Wilkinson Eyre, with whom they designed the multi-award winning Millennium Bridge in Gateshead.
Poole council intends to tender a construction contract for work to begin on site in 2008 and for the bridge to be operational in 2009. It is designed to improve transport links to the town of Hamworthy while promoting local regeneration and employment opportunities.
Government has pledged £14m towards the £34m cost of building the bridge, with local developers contributing the balance.
