IT ALL stemmed from the invention of basketball in the late 19th century, and went on to be a popular sport across the globe.

The people of Hampshire were as eager as any to get a slice of the action – as these pictures from 1977 show.

On February 21, the pupils at Brookfield school became Southern Counties champions when representing Hampshire in the national schools tournament in Bournemouth. They went on to compete in the national finals.

One of the images depicts Shirley Middle School after they won the Southampton Schools netball double on March 31. After winning the Central League, they entered the Southampton Middle School tournament and won all nine games.

Another picture shows Weston Park team pictured after winning the Southampton Netball Association’s 13th annual Alderman Hammond Memorial Tournament at Millbrook School on September 13.

Wildern School, Hedge End, had a double win with their third year team and senior side both winning their respective South Hants Schools’ tournaments.
