PLANS for a roof top bar in Southampton have been unveiled.

A new roof top bar could be created at the building which currently hosts Medbar in Oxford Street.

According to the proposals, the bar would open from midday to 11pm seven days a week and would operate independently of the existing bar and restaurant.

If the plans are approved, a third floor would be added to the building and residents would be able to access the venue via the existing stairwell on the southern side of the building.

The proposals put forward by Fred Panj will be discussed by the Planning and Rights of Way Panel at Southampton City Council on Tuesday.

According to official documents published ahead of the meeting,  the council received 16 letters in support of the scheme and 13 against it.

Those in favour said the roof top bar would be  “a great addition to Oxford Street” and would revitalise the area.

They also said it would create new jobs and support the local economy.

But others raised concerns over noise and the impact it would have on local residents.

Bargate Councillor Sarah Bogle said: “I object to the opening of a rooftop terrace bar due to impact of noise on  neighbouring residents.”

Planners’s recommendation is for the proposals to be refused due to concerns about noise, the “open nature” of the proposed terrace and proximity to habitable accommodation nearby.

They said: “In terms of its scale, siting and visual appearance the proposed bar structure is considered to be acceptable.”

Similarly, the principle of additional late night iuses in Oxford Street is supported. However, due to the proximity of the neighbouring habitable accommodation of Havelock Chambers and the Booth Centre, alongside existing residential on site, and the open nature of the proposed roof terrace, the proposal will be to the detriment of the amenity of those properties through the increase in noise and disturbance.”

The meeting will start at 2pm.
