PENSIONERS have spoken of their shock after a car smashed into a wall outside their home.

Residents of Justine Court on Bitterne Road East were startled after a car ploughed into the wall of their car park in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Bricks and debris littered the road and pavement, and the lamppost has been bent as a result.

Jean Wood, 83, was in her flat which faces the road when the crash happened.

The resident of 16 years said: “There was a big thump and I thought somebody had crashed into the building’s wall.

“I looked outside and it was pouring rain. There were two cars and it looked like one had crashed into the other one.

“There must have been about six or more youngsters getting out of the cars.

“People travel so fast down this road, there should be a lower speed limit. It is constant speeding all the time.”

Fellow resident Lyn added: “People speed fast along here, and I think there should be a new speed limit. It’s very noisy here as well, so I’m not really surprised.”

Another resident, who did not wish to be named, is grateful the bricks narrowly missed his car.

The resident of four years said: “It must have been an almighty bang.

“My car was two feet away from where it happened, but luckily there was no damage apart from brick dust.

“I am amazed at the amount of damage it caused; it’s a stubborn old wall. And for the lamppost to be bent, it must’ve been a hard hit.”

Hampshire Constabulary has been contacted for further information.
