THIS pretty New Forest pub made headlines around the world last year when it banned children.

But there’s a lot more to The Compass Inn than its adults only policy.

The dog friendly pub in Winsor is also 100 per cent gluten free.

Proprietor of 26 years Mop Draper told the Daily Echo: “It was unbelievable. We went viral! I was getting calls from all over the world and stories on it were getting millions of views. A TV station in Perth, Australia even did a poll and 79 per cent of people agreed with us!”

Being a small pub near Paultons Park, Mop and the team made the decision as lots of exhausted families were visiting after a full on theme park day and young guests were not always well behaved.

Children under the age of 12 are now only welcome on Sunday lunchtimes when they can tuck into all the gluten free delights available with lots of vegan and dairy free meals also on the menu.

Daily Echo:

The pub has been gluten free for seven years and everything from lasagne to steaks and pizzas to platters are served fresh from the kitchen.

The Compass is also famed for its dog friendliness. Boris the pub dog welcomes all four-legged friends and there’s a Forest dog walk on the first Sunday of every month. For £20, dog lovers can enjoy a coffee and bacon roll and a one and a half hour walk in the stunning surroundings before returning to the pub for a roast dinner and pudding either indoors or in the lovely beer garden surrounded by hanging baskets.

Daily Echo:

The Compass has been a pub for some 300 years and it’s had everything from a funeral parlour to a hairdresser in the back room. It used to be a stopover for drovers herding their cattle to market in Bournemouth.

Mop has had many challenges in her 26 years at the helm of the pub, including the recession and the smoking ban. But, Covid closures and restrictions have proved the worst.

She added: "Policing to make sure everyone is abiding by the restrictions has been the worst thing. The cost of staff because of the table service has also made a hole in the profits, as well as redesigning the pub to suit Covid rulings. The lovely customers make it all worth doing though.

Her most memorable moment was a visit from former Prime Minister Ted Heath.
