MUSIC students from across the UK have been penning songs for a brand new musical about Fidel Castro and the Cuban revolution.

Now they’re being given the chance to perform them live in an X Factor style event at Southampton’s Turner Sims in January.

More than 500 schools and colleges signed up to be part of the launch of Fidel the Musical, the brainchild of Dr Denise Baden from Southampton University’s Business School.

Pupils, including several from Southampton schools, will perform their songs to a panel of professional musicians and songwriters on Sunday January 24.

Then an audience of local music, theatre, history and politics enthusiasts will choose which songs they think should be in the musical, which tells the story of how Fidel Castro and the Cuban revolution pulls through against the odds.

A free Cuban cocktail, beer or soft drink is included in the ticket price.

The event is expected to run from 4.30pm until around 9pm.

Tickets are priced £15 for adults and £10 for under 18s.
