ON Children in Need Day last Friday local ukulele band Uke Box Glory entertained crowds in Christchurch High Street outside the Regent Centre and helped raise £1562 for the charity.

They were assisted by Regent Volunteers who sold raffle tickets for a chance to win one of a number of special hampers put together by donations from Regent staff, volunteers and some regular theatre and cinema goers at the Centre. These were all on display in the window of the Regent Information Centre and Box Office.

Later that evening Uke Box Glory were invited to appear on BBC TV South’s special Children in Need show which was broadcast from King Edward’s School in Southampton.

The organiser of the fund raising event was the Regent’s Information Centre and Box Office Manager, Sara Stewart-Haddow, who said: “This has been a magnificent team effort by everyone to raise £1562 for such a good cause. I want to thank everyone who donated their time and the prizes to make the event such a success. I am just so glad that the weather was so good on the day for Uke Box Glory to play for us outside the Regent and it was brilliant of the BBC to include them on their show.”

A Chance to win a fabulous Hamper in time for Christmas!

Now in its 39th year, the BBC’s Children in Need is gearing up for this year’s annual appeal on Friday 16 November.

Christchurch Information Centre and the Regent Centre Theatre & Cinema in Christchurch, will be joining tens of thousands of other community groups in the UK to help raise badly needed funds for disadvantaged children across the nation.

Locally based Uke Box Glory, organised by Regent Centre volunteer, Jane Lane of New Milton, will be sending 12 of their famous Ukulele players to entertain the crowds in Christchurch High Street, as they play popular songs and ditties under the Regent Centre canopy on Friday 16 November from 10am – 12 Noon.

Uke Box Glory were formed specifically as a group for ukulele enthusiasts who wanted to play for fun, whilst helping to raise funds for good causes. Their membership includes ukulele players from Christchurch, Southampton, Poole and Jane herself from Hordle. They have a vast repertoire to call on, ranging from folk and pop to rock and punk! So there really is something for everyone and all musical tastes.

In addition, there will be an opportunity to win a fabulous Hamper full of goodies and other prizes in the Raffle, with all proceeds going to the BBC’s Children in Need appeal. Tickets for the Hamper will be on sale at the Information Centre at the Regent from Wednesday 7 November.

This is a chance for the community in Christchurch to play a part in the BBC’s Children in Need appeal and enjoy a morning of great music. Why not drop in at the Regent, have a coffee, join in the fun and then do the shopping! All are very welcome on Friday 16 November from 10am – 12 Noon.

NB: If the weather is wet, don’t worry because Uke Box Glory will still be entertaining everyone from the outside the Regent Centre’s under the Uke Box Glory Gazeebo!
