WHILE parts of the White Swan date from the 14th century, this Winchester pub is anything but long in the tooth.

Lee Wilson and Jo Duncan took over the Hyde Street watering hole in January this year.

They wasted no time in making their mark, having carried out a raft of improvements to the building and its beer garden.

For those who remember the old pub, the first obvious difference is that the wall partitioning the venue is no more.

The pub now has a spacious and airy feel, and several pieces of new furniture.

It also has many little touches to make the bar more welcoming, such as attractive flowers on the tables.

Having abandoned serving food under its previous owners, the new publicans have also brought back the menu. Most lunchtime meals cost between £5 and £8.

In terms of the beer, the pub has four draught lagers, and three real ales including Old Speckled Hen and Greene King IPA.

The pub is also a good venue for those that enjoy a bit of healthy competition.

Along with televised sports, it has a pool table and two dartboards. Along with the pool and darts squads, it also has a cribbage side, poker players, and a quiz team.

However, it is arguably the live music that the publicans are the most excited about.

Not many Winchester pubs hold regular gigs, but The White Swan has at least one if not two bands performing each weekend.
