J B Priestley’s 1938 comedy followed three solidly respectable Yorkshire couples married on the same day 25 years previously who when celebrating this special anniversary discovered that they might not have been legally married all this time.

This is a handsomely-staged and dressed production with nice period touches. Very much of its time, however, this classic comedy does not always, despite the best efforts of the cast, wholly translate to the 21st century.

The long first half felt a little slow and the humour was at times a touch strained; it was really in the second half that it fully hit the mark.

The proceedings were enlivened by some droll performances.

Meriel Shepherd was in rumbustious form as the straight-talking Mrs Northrop.

Peter Moore had great fun as the inebriated photographer Henry Ormonroyd. And Natalie Windebank was delightful as the wide eyed observer, teenage maid Ruby Birtle.
