THERE is an energetic, zestful quality to this piece of juvenilia of Messrs Rice and Lloyd Webber, despite its serious underlying story, that was captured extremely well in DYT’s new production.
Under the capable guidance of musical director Rachael Thorpe the band were in fine form, their use, rather than the more modest musical accompaniment of previous shows, paying dividends and enhancing the proceedings considerably.
As befitted this show there were some dazzling costumes and a very fine technicolor dreamcoat. The action moved along seamlessly, with some nicely done set pieces and a good use of the enhanced performance space.
The cast was obviously having a good time and their enjoyment was infectious.
At the heart were some fine performances. Conor Chambers (Joseph) always commanded attention whenever on stage.
The narrators – Sophie Barnard, Caitlin Buckley and Georgia Murray – impressed with both their singing and their stage presence.
