IT is one of Jane Austen’s most beloved tales – and it’s about to get the musical treatment.

Music Theatre South is bringing its production of I Love You Because, an updated version Austen’s novel, Pride and Prejudice, to the stage for three nights next week.

The well-known story gets thrust into the coffee houses and bars of New York City and Music Theatre South is the first company to bring the show from Off-Broadway to the south coast.

The cast includes Matt McGrath, Adam Myers, Stacey Barnett, Sarah Bayliss, and India McKenzie.

Director, Harry Andreou, said: “It’s been a real challenge to keep things honest in this show.

“We are so used to overplaying everything out front in musical theatre, but in this case the cast are working hard to keep it intimate.

“The audience will be very much part of the production, as the company will be performing the show on a traverse, right in the middle of the audience. “I’m not sure if the cast are excited or terrified by that situation.”

Performances will run from July 16 to 19 at The Hub Theatre in Chapel Road, Southampton, from 8pm each night. Tickets from the Mayflower box office on 023 80 711 811 or ticketsouth.com
