Television’s most audacious comedy about the French Resistance comes to Swanmore Village Hall, which is given over to the ’Allo ’Allo idea of 1940s France.
Even though no performance can fail with a Jeremy Lloyd and David Croft script, Swanmore captures the OTT scenarios and characters like the veterans they are.
An array of cameo characters, from saucy French waitresses to Hitler impersonators, kept us doubled up with laughter – not to mention the blow-up Hitler, the mousetraps, exploding Dutch cheeses and whatever is hidden in the German sausages.
As usual René is caught between his domestic shenanigans, the Gestapo, the French police, and airmen hiding under the counter.
David Norster (René) captures the part flawlessly, and is superbly matched by Edith (Lesley Wilson) as he navigates between the catastrophes that erupt around him.
A hugely enjoyable evening’s entertainment from a group that unashamedly sets out, first and foremost, to please its local audience.
