Most people will have seen the film with the mousy Jane Horrocks, wide-boy Michael Caine, brassy Brenda Blethyn and watchful Ewan MacGregor.
It is a great film! Well, seeing it on stage with characters to rival the originals is even better. Mari Hoff (Sheryl Sketchley) was superb as she tottered about the stage in impossibly short skirts, delivering monologues and one-liners to make you weep with laughter and tears and launching herself on jaded Ray Say (Stuart Anderson).
Little Voice (Emily Cotton) sang like the stars, so much so that she raised goosebumps and who wouldn’t love safe and encouraging Billy (Stewart Plumridge)?
The rest of the cast were equally well chosen by director Sally Whyte.
The set (Simon Sketchley) and props were so detailed and accurate that we were immediately transported to an ill-kept two-up, two-down in Lancashire and the lighting and special effects brought it alive (Mark Bodger).
A flawless production.
