PREPARE to be dazzled by the Daily Echo-backed fireworks display at Mayflower Park tonight.

More than £7,000 worth of fireworks will be set off from a barge on Southampton Water, setting the Southampton skyline ablaze with colour.

Thousands of people are expected to flock to the edge of Southampton Water to witness the fireworks extravaganza, which last year raised £18,000 for charities in the area.

Run by Southampton Round Table and supported by the Daily Echo, this year's explosive event promises to be bigger and better than ever.

Richard Hammond, from the Southampton Round Table, who is helping to organise the display, said: "It is going to be a bigger display than ever this year with a fantastic finale.

"The display happens above the water so there are tremendous reflections. We are using fireworks which create big fireballs in the sky."

Festivities begin at 2pm when Cole's funfair arrives in town. Wave 105 will also be entertaining crowds from 5.30pm. The fireworks display will be set off from the Williams Shipping barge on Southampton Water from 7.15pm. Admission is £3 for adults and £2 for children. Tickets can be bought on the night or in advance from the Daily Echo shop in Hanover Buildings or Southampton City Information Centre in the Civic Centre.
