POLICE are investigating after a player was allegedly subjected to racist abuse during a non-league football match in Hampshire.
The abusive comments were allegedly made by an AFC Totton fan towards the reserve goalkeeper of Barwell Town during the team’s Southern League Premier Division clash on Saturday.
The Daily Echo understands it prompted the pair to square up to each other at the side of the pitch at the Testwood Stadium.
The confrontation lasted for several minutes before the fan was escorted from the ground by a club steward shortly before the end of the match, which AFC Totton won 2-1.
Trouble flared when Barwell’s reserve keeper Amro Khanid, 22, was watching the game from the dugout.
Eyewitnesses told police he was subjected to vile language about his ethnicity.
But it is understood the player has not made a complaint to police and does not want the matter taken further.
Police were made aware of the incident following the match and said they are now investigating but no arrests have been made.
However, they are appealing for anyone who witnessed the incident to come forward and speak with officers.
AFC Totton scored an 80th minute goal to seal the comefrom- behind victory. Both sides had a player sent off during the match, which attracted a crowd of 368.
An AFC Totton club spokesman said it was brought to the attention of management after the game.
He said: “The particular spectator involved was immediately ejected from the ground and the situation is now being reviewed internally.
Racism is definitely something that will not be tolerated at our club.”
Anyone with information should contact police in Totton on 101.
