A CAMPAIGN against the production of nuclear warheads at the Atomic Weapons Establishment is to be launched tonight.

Action AWE, a new grassroots peace campaign, is calling for people to get involved locally and politically to prevent new nuclear weapons being produced and deployed.

Dr Rebecca Johnson, a chair of the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons, ICAN, will be a keynote speaker at the launch meeting tonight in Reading Civic Centre.

She said: “We will keep up the pressure and put a public and political spotlight on the nuclear bomb factories until at least the 2015 election.

"Action AWE’s aims are to scrap Trident and ensure that Britain joins other governments in multilateral negotiations to get a global treaty banning all nuclear weapons.”

Those behind the campaign hope to ultimately eradicate the production of nuclear weapons at AWE Aldermaston and Burghfield through non-violent protest, outreach and education.

Yesterday, activists from the group put up two large banners in Reading’s Oracle shopping centre to spread awareness of their cause.

The launch meeting will be held at 7.30pm this evening in the Kennet Room, Reading Civic Centre.
