PEOPLE in a Hampshire town will be consulted this spring about proposed improvements to its main road.

The county and town councils want to improve the junction of West Street and Jacklyns Lane in Alresford, near Winchester.

The project will also create a pedestrian area outside the Co-op.

Currently there is a lay-by, a throwback from when the site was Hankin's Garage.

Heritage-style streetlights are also proposed for West Street, East Street, parts of Jacklyns Lane and Broad Street.

Meanwhile a feasibilty study is to be carried for traffic changes on The Soke at the bottom of Broad Street.

A survey reported 4,000 vehicles on the road per day including heavy lorries heading for the watercress farms and packing plant.
